Worst. Toy. Ever.  
At first glance this seems like a pretty neat puzzle. Dont be fooled. This puzzle uses photoelectric sensors to detect the puzzle pieces which seems kind of clever until the sun goes down. This thing moos and neighs and quacks at all hours of the night. If there are pieces missing and you turn the lights off (to go to bed for example) this thing moos neighs and quacks. Any flash of light (or darkness) sets it off. More than once Ive been scared witless by this puzzle. Awful awful awful. : 2010-09-16 00:05:22

It is haunted.  
We were sure we had a polterguist until we took the batteries out of this puzzle. Everytime someone walked by it went off. We heard cock-a-doodle-do in the middle of the night. I even had a friend that was telling me how she was sure her house was haunted and was saying that she was hearing things from the basement in the middle of the night. She has this puzzle so I told her to take the batteries out and since then her "haunt" has moved along. :)

Made my daughter cry  
This puzzle is horrible. The sounds are hard to distinguish from one another and are very harsh and unpleasant to the point that the puzzle made my one year old cry! Another fun bonus of this puzzle is that the sounds go off when you dim the lights turn on the lights or turn off the lights. Really great when you are cleaning up toys after baby has gone to bed! Apparently as one reviewer pointed out the sounds are activated by light.

As for educational value the the puzzle is not smart enough to play the right sound when you put the right puzzle piece in its place. In other words your child may think that a cow goes oink if she places the cow piece where the pig goes that is if they can even distinguish the pig sound from the cow sound in this garbage puzzle. Oh and did I mention that this is not even truly a wooden puzzle? All Melissa and Doug puzzles have a layer of plastic coating a layer of toxin-laden MDF. not educational noises go off for any piece!  
just received this in the mail today and im not too happy. the pieces activate noise on any animal so there is no educational value to this. she can put a cow over the dog and here the dog noise. also the sounds arent good at all sound very muffled and really loud. not happy and would not recommend buying this. this is my first melissa and doug toy....ive heard great things and am disappointed! : 2010-09-16 00:05:22
